Coming over the next 2 weeks is a series of posts focusing on wine, red, white and sparkling will all be introduced. This post is all about the history and things to know about your wine, terms and the correct way’s to drink your wine.
Wine can be dated back to 7000BC and has been considered religious since it’s origins. The European content has always produced wine and as other regions of the world were discovered wine travelled with it. Today the list of great wine producing countries is vast and the most common are Italy France, Spain, USA, Argentina, Chile, Australia, South Africa, Chian and Germany based on volume.
Common Wine Varieties by Country
Even though some countries are known for certain varietals, for example, New Zealand and Sauvignon Blanc and Australia Shiraz and Chardonnay. We will look at the most popular wine countries and their specialty.

Australia produces some of the finest red wines in the world especially Shiraz from the Barossa Valley and the cooler climate Pinot Noir. The list of red wines is more your typical varieties, we will go into more depth with varieties in other posts.
Main Australian Red Wines
Shiraz Creates medium to full-bodied wines with varying flavour profiles and structure depending on region, climate and winemaking techniques.
Pinot Noir Light to medium bodied wines with signature cherry and strawberry fruit. Regional differences abound but in general top Pinot Noir from Australia is restrained in nature.
Cabernet Sauvignon Medium to full-bodied wines with firm, structured tannins. Regional expressions vary but Cabernet Sauvignon’s varietal character shines through no matter where it is grown.
Australia produces some of the finest Chardonnays in the world and the wine industry in its early days was built on this variety. As with most things we are now producing exceptional Sauvignon Blanc and Rieslings.
Main Australian White Wines
Chardonnay wide range of styles: Cool climate versions tend to be lighter in body with higher acidity and more subtle flavours. Warm climate versions tend to be more full-bodied with richer, riper fruit and bolder flavours.
Sauvignon Blanc typically light-bodied with fresh vibrant and distinctive flavours. Oaked and unoaked versions depending on the desired style
Reisling while the vast majority of Riesling is harvested for crisp, dry wine production, late-harvest sweet wines are also produced. Botrytis-affected wines are not as common in Australia as they are in Germany due to our generally drier climate. However, from time to time, the right conditions occur for this style to be made.
As a wine growing country, we are also great producers of fortified wines (ports and muscats) and dessert wines (botrytis Semillon)
