Without a Word : A Silent Promise

The Silent Courage Of Showing Up

Without a Word: A Silent Promise

A short film about the courage we live with, the love we hold onto, and the quiet courage of those who stay.

The Story

Without a Word: A Silent Promise is a raw, emotionally grounded short film exploring mental health, love, and the quiet courage of those who stay.

At the heart of the story is Lisa — a woman navigating the slow, invisible unraveling of the man she loves. Matt isn’t absent… but he’s no longer present. The words have dried up, the laughter has faded, and what’s left is silence.

But Lisa stays.
Not out of weakness, not out of duty — but because of something deeper. A silent promise.

This film isn’t loud. It’s not full of answers.
It’s about what holds people together when everything else is falling apart.
It’s about the things we carry for others when they can’t carry themselves.
It’s about her.

Why This Film Matters

Told through the eyes of Lisa, this story shines a light on the silent social contracts that exist in so many relationships — the ones we never speak aloud, but live by every day.

It’s about the promises made without words.
The kind of love that stays even when the person you love seems to vanish.

I’ve lived parts of this story.
I’ve felt the silence.
I’ve pushed people away.
And I’ve seen what it costs to stay — and what it means.

This isn’t just a film.
It’s a mirror.
And maybe, for someone, a moment of recognition that says,
“You’re not alone.”

Feel Something? Say Something.

Has this story struck a chord?
Maybe you’ve felt the weight behind Lisa’s silence — or seen a little of yourself in it.
Maybe you’ve been waiting to fund something real, raw, and worth it.

We’re building this with heart, not hype — and we’re looking for the right people to help bring it to life:
a male lead, a female lead, two strong supporting women, two grounded supporting men, and a few extras to round out the world.

Got questions? Ideas? A feeling this might be your kind of project?

The Feeling Behind the Silence

Some stories don’t need much dialogue — just a feeling.
“Broken” by Colin Lillie captures the quiet emotional truth behind Without a Word in a way few words could.

“Broken is not the end. It’s the beginning of understanding.”

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT – WITHOUT A WORD: A SILENT PROMISE

This is not just a film. It is a deeply personal truth — a story lived, a promise kept.

Without a Word: A Silent Promise is an ode to my wife, Jane. Without her courage, I would not be here. It’s that simple.

This film is a thank you in the form of a story. In the quietest hours of my own struggle with mental illness, when words failed, when connection seemed impossible, and when the darkness felt overwhelming — Jane stayed.

But she didn’t stay with grand gestures or loud declarations. She stayed with presence. Quiet, unshakeable presence. In those moments, I learned that love is not always about fixing, saving, or even understanding. Sometimes, it is simply about being there.

Lisa, the character based on Jane, embodies this quiet courage. She doesn’t try to rescue Matt. She doesn’t force him to open up. She just doesn’t leave. This is not a story of triumph over mental illness. It is a story of resilience — not just for those who suffer, but for those who stand beside them.

Matt’s journey is my own — the silent weight of shame, the emotional shutdown, and the slow isolation that comes with untreated mental illness. But this is not just his story. It is Lisa’s. It is the story of the one who stays when love is no longer easy.

We tell this story with quiet moments, with silence that speaks louder than dialogue, with rain that feels like grief, and with light that offers quiet hope. Because life’s most honest moments are often unspoken.

This is a film for anyone who has ever stayed beside someone who couldn’t find their way. For those who have whispered, “I’m here,” even when they felt helpless.

My hope is that Without a Word helps people feel seen — not just those who are struggling, but those who choose to stay, even when staying is the hardest choice of all.
